Common questions

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You can refer yourself: just call, email, or fill in the form above. You don't need a GP or any other professional to refer you.

How much does it cost? What if I can't afford much?

Sessions are low-cost, starting from £15. As a guide: adults £15, young people £40, couples £50 and families £60 per session. You're welcome to give more if you can, which helps keep therapy open to others. If money is tight, please still get in touch and we'll talk it through.

How long is the wait for a first appointment?

On average around 8 to 10 weeks, though it genuinely varies with demand, so treat that as a guide rather than a promise. Get in touch and we'll give you a realistic picture of where things stand.

How long are sessions, and how many will I need?

Sessions usually last about an hour. A full course is up to 30 sessions, normally weekly. To allow for holidays these can be spread over a couple of extra weeks, but it's still a maximum of 30 sessions. We'll shape it around what you need and review it together as we go.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes, what you share stays confidential. There are a few exceptions: if you disclose a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, if you disclose information relating to a serious crime such as terrorism, money laundering or drug trafficking, or if we're required to by a court of law.

Who can come to Empathy Northwest?

We offer support to adults, young people, couples and families.

What kinds of things do you help with?

A wide range, including anxiety, depression, loss and bereavement, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, anger and more. If what you're facing isn't listed, please get in touch anyway.

What types of therapy do you offer?

Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Integrative Therapy, Creative Therapy, and Holistic Therapy including Reiki and Access Bars. You don't need to choose in advance; we'll match you with the right fit for you.

Do you offer support for children?

Yes, from the age of 3. We offer creative therapy in our dedicated Sunflower Play Room, a safe space for children and young people to express themselves.

Is the building accessible?

There's a single step at the entrance, but we have a ramp we can put out to make the building accessible. Most of our rooms are upstairs, though we have a ground-floor room where sessions can take place. Please note there are no toilet facilities on the ground floor. If the step or the stairs would be a barrier, tell us when you get in touch and we'll arrange your sessions on the ground floor.

How do I get started?

Self-refer by calling 0303 303 1333, emailing us, or filling in the form above. We'll be in touch with next steps and a realistic idea of the current wait.

What if I need help urgently?

These services aren't for emergencies. If you're in immediate distress, contact the Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7), your GP, or call 999.
